Thomas Eugene Smithmyer Obituary

Thomas Eugene Smithmyer, 80, St. Augustine, died September 26, 2021 in the emergency room at UPMC Altoona. Born December 17, 1940 in R.D. Ashville, son of the late Earl and Marie (Storm) Smithmyer. Preceded in death by sisters; Barbara Yeager and Alice (Tom) Farabaugh, and brother, Ed. Survived by wife of 58 years, the former Mary Lou Yahner whom he married October 20, 1962 at St. Monica Catholic Church, Chest Springs, 14 children; Mike (Marie Smith), Linda (Tim) Thomas, Gene (Crystal Pheasant), Jerry (Tami McMahon), Bob (Betsy Freeze), Mark (Karen Funicelli), Sharon (Dan) Fogle, Donna (Dan) Clifford, Mary Anne (Andy) McMullen, Frank (Kara Holtz), Fred (Natalie Garner), Karen (Tom) Nieri, Kevin (Brittany Anna), and Ginny (Dan) Anna, 35 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, brothers; Earl (Alene), Dave (Judy), Jack (Eileen), brother in law, Al Yeager, sister in law, Elaine Anna, he is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He was an Army Veteran. Tom farmed in St. Augustine since 1966, where he and Mary Lou grew potatoes, as well as corn, soybeans, and grains. He was a longtime member of the PA Farm Bureau and served as Cambria County President at various times. He was a 4-H Leader of the Pleasant Hills Swine Club for more than 28 years. Tom was also a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church since 1966 where he provided leadership in many capacities through the years. He was a life-long hunter and fisherman, and his greatest joy was sharing his talent and passion with his children and grandchildren. Friends will be received from 2 until 8 PM Tuesday at the Gibbons Funeral Home, 1688 Liberty St., Ashville, PA 16613, where a Vigil Service will be held. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Wednesday at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Committal, St. Monica Cemetery, Chest Springs.
