Regis E. Farabaugh 94, of Chest Springs, in residence at James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center, Altoona, passed away Monday, March 24, 2025, at the medical center. He was born August 4, 1930, in Loretto, the youngest son of the late Erhart A. and Marie C. (Smithbower) Farabaugh. On September 4, 1957, in St. Augustine, Regis married Margaret C. Dunegan, who preceded him in death on May 29, 2022. Regis is survived by seven children: Carol Ann (Michael McGuire), Sally (Danny Roadcap), Patrick (Kathleen Lazere), Jeanne (Michael Mayo), Michael (Tammie Moses), Regis B., and Cathy (Corrine Makarewich); six grandchildren Aaron McGuire (Natalie Bukowski), Jessica, Chrissy (Luke Zayicek), and Luke Farabaugh, Margaret Annie Farabaugh, and Charlie Farabaugh Makarewich; and two great grandchildren, Sasha and Ozzy Zayicek, and many extended family members and lifelong friends. Regis was preceded in death by a son, Myron; brothers, Robert A. (Ruth Haas) and Myron A. (Rita Borlie); and sisters, Dorothy (John Bovin), Eleanor (Frank Calu, Edward Buvel), and Catherine (Patrick Little). Regis was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He attended St. Michael’s Catholic School in Loretto. A lifelong farmer, he was a working member of the Brotherhood of Carpenters, Local 1419, from where he retired in 1995. He spent his early working years employed locally at various jobs in the coal mining and railroad industries, and a short time in Ohio, but his real joy was farming close to his home town. Regis was a member of St. Monica Roman Catholic Church, Chest Springs, and the American Legion, Post 748, in Loretto. He loved to play Cinch, and was an avid hunter, fisherman, and baseball fan. Every one of his children at some time played either baseball or softball. Regis would watch any professional baseball game on television, but his favorites were the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Altoona Curve. He also very much looked forward to an annual trip in the fall to see the elk herd near Benezette, Pennsylvania. He proudly served his country in the Army as a combat medic during the Korean conflict, achieving the rank of Staff Sargeant. He was stationed in the area known as the Iron Triangle, and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge. The family would like to sincerely thank the doctors, nursing and clinical staff, and the volunteers of the Van Zandt VA Medical Center for their exemplary care, support, concern, and kindness to our father during his time there. Friends will be received from 10:00 AM until time of the funeral Mass at 11:00 AM, Friday April 11, 2025 at St. Monica Catholic Church, Chest Springs, with Rev. Mariusz Gorazd, celebrant. Committal at St. Monica Cemetery. Military Honors will be coordinated by the American Legion in Loretto, with support from other local veterans’ organizations. Arrangements are provided by the Gibbons Funeral Home, 1688 Liberty St., Ashville, PA 16613. www.gibbonsfhashvillecoalport.com
