Phyllis Marie Wharton

Phyllis Marie Wharton, 85, of Akron, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, July 15, 2026. She was born on April 14, 1941, in Hastings, PA, the eldest daughter of James and Mary (Schall) Arto. Phyllis met her husband, John, at the Chest Springs church picnic. They married in 1963 and moved to Akron, Ohio, where they raised three amazing children. Phyllis enjoyed quilting with local sewing clubs, traveling, shopping and spending time with family and friends. She was an active member of Springfield Township Women’s Club. She was extremely proud of her five grandsons- each holding a special place in her heart. Phyllis is survived by her loving husband, John; son, Kevin (Bernadette) Wharton, daughters,Janet Canova (Keith Reno) and Lori Wharton; grandsons, Mitchell Canova, Dr. Tyler Canova, Daniel Wharton, Michael (Jessica) Wharton and Kevin Wharton; brother, Leonard Arto; and sister, Shirley (Rich) Books. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary (Schall) Arto; and sister-in-law, Marie Arto. Family and friends will be received on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00pm at Gibbons-Penksa Funeral Home, 1688 Liberty St. Ashville, PA 16613. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 803 St. Augustine Road, Dysart, PA 16636. Fr. Bob Reese, officiating.
