John R. "Coach" Lloyd Sr.

John R. “Coach” Lloyd Sr., 85, of Irvona, died Tuesday November 8, 2022 at home, with his family by his side. He was born August 10, 1937 in Smoke Run, the son of the late John and Elizabeth (Jones) Lloyd. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Alice Webb on June 16, 2012, after nearly 50 years of marriage, and by an infant brother, William. Surviving are his sons, John Jr. (Beth Caskey) of Coalport, David (Christy Concha) of Mooresville, NC, and William (Julie Korinchak) of Flinton, 4 grandchildren; Christyn Lloyd, Nikki (Ethan) Maneval, Sarabeth Lloyd, and Breanna Shawley.  A sister, Ann Klingler of Pittsburgh, and several nieces and nephews. John was a 1956 graduate of Moshannon Valley High School and received a Bachelor’s Degree from Lock Haven State College in Physical Education in 1960. He served in the US Army from 1961 to 1963, attaining the rank of Staff Sargent. He began his teaching career in 1964 at Glendale High School as a Phys. Ed teacher and retired in 1999 after 34 years. As the head football coach from 1964 to 1980, his teams had a record of 83 wins, 46 losses and 7 ties. John received a masters of education degree from the University of Tennessee. In 1998 in honor of his contributions, he was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. As a lifelong outdoorsman, he enjoyed trapping, hunting, and fishing with his family and friends, and had a great interest in gardening. John was a Christian, devoted church goer, attending Irvona and Coalport Presbyterian Churches and the Irvona Methodist Church. The family offers its gratitude to the hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and AseraCare Hospice who assisted in John’s care. And a special “Thanks” to Carla Moore who attended to Coach in his personal care for the past two months. Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at the Gibbons Funeral Home, 1085 Main St., Coalport, PA 16627. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, at the Coalport Presbyterian Church, Rev. Rob Bruinooge, officiating. Interment immediately following at Hegarty Crossroads Cemetery, Beccaria, PA, followed by a dinner at the Orthodox Church Hall, Irvona.
