Eugene Zupon Obituary

Eugene Patrick Zupon, fondly remembered as “Smiley” or “Smile” by family and friends, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2026, at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nevada, at the age of 84.Born on July 13, 1941, in Dysart, Pennsylvania, Gene grew up in the close-knit community of his hometown, the son of Joseph Zupon and Anna Zupon, where he developed the strong work ethic, kindness, and warm personality that defined him throughout his life. In 1959, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving honorably for two years. It was during his military service that he met Karen, and the two married, building a life together and welcoming two beloved sons, Joel and Jeff, into the world. Though their marriage of 12 years eventually ended in divorce, Gene remained a devoted and loving father and grandfather. His infectious smile, gentle humor, and quiet strength brought endless joy to those around him. Smiley had a special way of lighting up any room and making people feel seen and appreciated. He treated his nephews, nieces, cousins, and many close friends like close family, welcoming them with open arms and genuine care.Smiley was the kind of person who would give you the shirt off his back, money out of his pocket, and do it all with his smile. He cherished every moment spent with his loved ones—especially his grandchildren, who were a source of immense pride and happiness in his later years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Zupon and Anna Zupon; his sister, Barbara Curry; and brother-in-law, Dr. Donald "Don" Curry. Gene is survived by his brother, Joseph “Junior” Zupon (age 86); his sons, Joel and Jeff; his daughters-in-laws, Maureen Zupon and Tania Zupon; his cherished grandchildren, Spencer, Ava, Angelique, and Valentina; and the many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends he embraced as family; along with all those whose lives he brightened with his signature smile. On Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 11:00am, a private graveside service will be held at the Ashville Cemetery. Following this at 1:00 until 3:00, a Celebration of Life will take place at the Ashville VFW in Ashville, Pennsylvania for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests donations to a veterans’ organization, such as the Wounded Warrior Project, Tunnel to Towers or another cause meaningful to him or the family. Eugene “Smiley” Zupon will be remembered for his service to his country, his deep love for his family in all its forms, and the warmth of a smile that could turn any day brighter. His legacy of kindness, generosity, resilience, and family devotion will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
