Calvin James Ates

Calvin James Ates, 27, Nanty Glo, passed away Monday morning, May 18,2026. Born September 9, 1998 in Johnstown, son of James and Lori (Stoy) Ates. He is preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Dorothy (Replogle) Stoy; aunt, Louise (Stoy) Baker; paternal grandfather, Calvin L. Ates and paternal grandmother, Virginia Ates; and uncle, Donald Ates. He is survived by his parents; siblings, Savannah Ates of Pleasant Gap, and Jimmy (Quinique) Ates of New Florence; grandfather, James (Gus) Stoy of Spindley; aunt, Dessa Walbeck who treated him like a grandson; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Calvin was a graduate of Blacklick Valley High School. He worked as a Senior Officer Specialist at the Federal Prison in Loretto, PA and was previously employed at the Cambria County Prison in multiple positions. His favorite thing to do was working on anything his father would help him with. His other passions included riding his motorcycle and quad, doing projects with his tractor, and hanging out with his friends, especially his best friend Andrew Watroba. Calvin had a loving soul, and helped anyone that needed it. He had the greatest work ethic, and was loved unconditionally and will be missed by all. Family and friends will be received Friday, May 22, 2026 from 2pm to 8pm at Gibbons Funeral Home, Ashville, 1688 Liberty St. Ashville, PA 16613. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2026 at 11am at St. Thomas Aquinas Church. Rev. Justin Treon, Officiating. Pallbearers will include Jimmy Ates, Andrew Watroba, Nate Planell, Joe Frontino, Dakoda Sheesley, and Max Rager.  Interment will take place at St. Thomas Aquinas Cemetery. A funeral meal will be held at the Ashville Fire Hall following the funeral mass. Arrangements are under the care of Gibbons Funeral Home, Ashville.
