Alma E. (Biller) Scanlan Obituary

Alma Scanlan, 72, a guest at Garvey Manor Nursing Home, formerly of R.D.Gallitzin, died November 18, 2024, at Garvey Manor surrounded by her loving family. She was born April 8, 1952, in Johnstown, daughter of the late Anthony “Tony” and Helen (Farabaugh) Biller. Survived by husband of 49 years, Glenn whom she married on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1975, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Loretto, children: Erin (Jeffrey) Laich, and Joseph (Shannon Leyden), 5 grandchildren: Braxton, Aubrey, Joshua, Dominick, and Jack, siblings: Tony (Judy), Marie (Peter) Battles, Joe (Lisa), and Duane “Dewey”. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Alma loved her grandchildren, she was an avid reader, and a loving member of the Loretto Community. A 1970, graduate of Penn Cambria High School, and a 1973 graduate of Philipsburg General Hospital School of Nursing. She had worked at the Altoona Hospital/ Altoona Regional Health System for 41 years and retired from the pregnancy care center in 2014. She was a member of the Loretto Volunteer Fire Company and Ambulance Service, Loretto American Legion Auxiliary, and the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Loretto, where a funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Thursday November 21, 2024, Very Rev. John D. Byrnes Celebrant. Committal, St. Michael Cemetery, Loretto. Friends will be received from 4 until 8 PM Wednesday November 20, 2024, at the Gibbons Funeral Home, 1688 Liberty St., Ashville, PA 16613, where a Vigil Service will be held Wednesday, and a Cambria County Nurses Honor Guard service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Hearts of Mimi Team (Alzheimer’s Association) in Alma’s memory.
