RITTNER – Bernice Marie, 86, died April 3, 2019.  Wife, mother, medical professional, secular Franciscan & church volunteer.  Born in Loretto, PA on May 15, 1932.  She graduated from Cresson High in 1950 and from Mount Aloysius Jr. College in 1953, completing her medical technology training at Conemaugh Hospital in Johnstown in 1954.  Later, she went on to complete her B.S. degree and M.Ed. at St Francis University, Loretto.  On July 24, 1954, she married James A. Rittner, the love of her life. They had three children.

 

After the children were older, Bernice returned to work at Altoona Mercy Hospital.  She earned national registry certification as a Medical Technologist and became active in the South Central Chapter of the Penn. Society for MTs, holding the office of president in 1981/82.  Bernice was promoted several times at Altoona Mercy, attaining Hospital Laboratory Supervisor until her retirement in 1997.  

 

She is preceded in death by parents, C. Leonard Tubbs and Grace (Parrish), husband Dr. James A. Rittner, brother Richard, and grandmother Martha Parrish, who helped rear her.  She is survived by two sons, Richard J. of New York and James A. II of Cresson, daughter Marianne and her husband, David Holmes, of New Mexico, and close family friend Ruth Diehl.  She is also survived by loving cousin Florence Bradley of Florida, Kevin McMullen of Cresson, as well as many friends and relatives in the area.  Bernice spent the last year and a half in New Mexico, where she enjoyed muchos amigos from church and the fire department, with special mention of Angela Norman and Father José Hernández.

 

Bernice was a member of the St. Elizabeth of Hungary Fraternity of the Secular Franciscan order.  She was active in St. Aloysius Catholic Parish in the Pastoral Council and St. Vincent de Paul Society. 

 

Friends received on Wednesday, April 24th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Gibbons Funeral Home, 1688 Liberty St., Ashville, PA 16613. Funeral Mass is at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 25th, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Cresson, with Fr. Leo Arnone, Celebrant. Committal will be at the church cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul via St. Aloysius Parish. www.gibbonsfhashvillecoalport.com
